SAN HOLO CONCERT POSTER

Bill Graham Civic Auditorium 2021

When I was first approached to create art for APE Concerts, my son had just entered the world—tiny, new, and full of light. His arrival cracked something open in me, as if I’d been reborn alongside him. Without hesitation, my hand moved to sketch a Phoenix …an ancient symbol of renewal, rising from its own ashes. It felt instinctive, raw, necessary.

But life had another chapter to write.

As the date for San Holo’s performance neared, the world abruptly shifted. Stages went dark. Cities fell silent. COVID swept in, pressing pause on everything—including this piece. For 18 long months, I found myself returning to the image, staring at it like a mirror. The Phoenix, frozen mid-flight, waiting …not just for a concert, but for all of us to find our way back to each other.

And when we did, when the lights came back on, when music filled the air again, it wasn’t just an event. It was a rebirth.

This isn’t just a Phoenix. It’s a promise. A pulse. A testament to what it means to fall, to wait, to rise.
Rise, Phoenix. Rise.
